The Most Common Vocal Problems and How To Fix Them
Many of my students have different issues and challenges. The most common are breathing. The second one is connecting your chest voice to your head voice, which used to be called falsetto.
I don’t like that word because I believe every note we sing is from the chest or lungs; therefore, true falsetto sounds like a Disney cartoon character.
There are many scales that connect these notes, and in time the transition becomes smooth. Like anything in life, it takes focus and repetition. For girls, the middle C, and right above, is where you get into a danger zone.It takes intense stomach muscles and stamina to correct this, but it can be done. To do this correctly, we must open our chest as if you were yawning, and be fearless about engaging your head voice as you would your chest voice. For men, the transition into head voice is either natural or can be attained.
I have had students who did not hear the pitch, so they couldn’t tell if they were singing in tune. If I didn’t know better, I would might have said (a while back) that they could not be taught. Now, I know that with focus, and determination, you can actually train your ear.
It amazes me when a student comes in a week or two later, and they are singing the scales, right on pitch! If I hadn’t heard them myself, I wouldn’t believe it.
Breathing is the problem everyone shares. We breathe all day long, but as soon as we sing, we forget to breathe! There are so many easy and fun ways to fix the breathing problems. When students start breathing, they can sing three times more powerfully and with more clarity.
