American Idol: The Art of an Audition Part 2

kermit the frog 300x197 American Idol: The Art of an Audition Part 2Everyone is getting ready to audition for, Glee, American Idol, and then, X-Factor. First, it will be “Glee” since the deadline is April 26th. The audition for this fantastic and groundbreaking show is unusual to say the least. It is a national search on MySpace, and the song list is just awful.

They have so many bad songs in there. “Rehab” is just one. You must send a video with a one minute kiss ass reason why  you love the show, then a 4 minute song. 4 minutes is a long time. Why? Any decent critic can judge a singer in 12 bars. I don’t know what they are thinking.

Next, the American Idol Summer Audition. Here we go again, the circus comes to town. If you are a pretty good singer, you may be overshot by the guy in the frog suit next to you singing “It’s Not Easy being Green”. How do you overcome this? You better really have your game on, big time, so they CAN”T pass you up.

“How do you do that? you ask. I’ll tell you how. Choose the right song for YOU, and work , work ,work, and work on it. Live and breathe it. Sleep it, get to know it. Make the song your best friend, and be so sick of it, you never sing it the same way twice. Make it your comfort song,  You have to convince people you own it and you are letting them in as if they are a voyeur.

My student from Paris, France, Marine, was singing When A Man Loves A Woman” last night at her lesson. She is an excellent singer, love her voice. But I broke down the song, and showed her how to tell the story, change the words, feel the pain, feel the love, make it your own.

Singing blues songs is a good exercise for getting creative. Try Stormy Monday” Since I fell for you” “Route 66″, songs of that genre. Also try torch songs, “Stormy Weather”, “The Man that Got away”, “I Got it bad” These songs will help you sing any song better. and then go out there and give them 110%.

The show tonight  started with the pre-recorded group production number.I noticed how nice Lee sounded recorded. Very nice, An Elvis Medley of course. It was cute. Two people will depart this evening, Andrew is the first.  He is pretty good, has potential, and will do something. He needs to get a manager and PR person, ASAP!

My wish has been granted, I know,, that is mean, I’m sorry, but Katie is leaving. I just never cared much for her so, it was bound to happen eventually.

And then there were seven! Next week is another week, another goodbye, who will it be?
