Scarlet came to me from Texas after she had made it through the finals on American Idol. She had six months to work on her voice, her body, and choose songs from a list provided to her. When I heard this young woman sing, My mouth flew open. It was like having Jessie J and Christina Aguilera in my studio, with a dash of Mariah Carey’s high notes.
So we worked and worked every day, Yes! every day because this is a big break in anyone’s career. She had earlier throat problems, and her voice hurt when she sang. I had to completely re teach her to sing. This was quite a process, and she did it.
She had a makeover, bought a new wardrobe and went on the Los Angeles for the TV finals. I thought I had the winner! I was sure no one had heard this kind of singer ever in a competition show. She started texted me, ‘I’ve had No sleep, they keep us up til 2 am learning songs, and I have a 5 am call. I want to come home!‘ Then, she said, ‘Now they are giving me new songs to learn in an hour and teaching me dance steps in a group’.
She was so miserable, I gave in and said, honey, this does not sound like they have your best interest at heart. I said,, do you want to quit, she said, I will be gone soon, I can’t learn these songs this fast. That is what happened, she was not kept in that last one on one round in Los Angeles, and sent home.
The world lost a great chance to hear a great singer. She went back to Texas because she has a little boy her mom was caring for. We are still in touch, and I am hopeful that one day you can all hear this girls talent!
